Chapter Seven
Autumn walked out of the house feeling hopeful. Sandra provided her with something that may break this case wide open and help her find who this âMichaelâ is. And that mystery man just may be the key to unlocking this whole thing.
She was making her way down the sidewalk to the car when her phone started to ring. She pulled it from her pocket and saw Officer Wilderâs name on the screen. Her heart skipped a few beats, and her cheeks started to heat up. She cleared her throat and his answer. âDetective Rose.â
âHey, Autumn, itâs Laine. I was just chatting with Michelle about your case, and I hoped I could get with you and talk about a few things.â
Autumn wrinkled her forehead and frowned. It was odd that he would be calling her about a case, considering he had never done so in the past. Maybe the street got a hit on something that could help her. Any little help goes a long way in a case like this.
âSure, what were you thinking?â She heard nothing but silence on the other side of the line. She pulled her phone away from her face and looked at the screen. The screen showed they were still connected, so she said âHelloâ into the phone, and there was no response.
She moved the phone away from her face again and went to hit the end button when she heard him say something into the phone. âCan you hear me?â
She put the phone back on her ear. âWhat?â
âCan you hear me?â he asked.
âI can now. Whatâs up?â
âSorry, Iâm at the precinct, and the reception in this place is terrible. I am just getting off duty now. What if we met up at Charlieâs on Duff at, letâs say ⦠five-thirty?â
Autumn stopped for a moment. Is he asking her on a date? Or is this a strictly professional meeting? Should she ask him? What if it was just platonic?â
âProfessional level, correct?â she spit out before she knew what was leaving her mouth.
âUmm, yeah! Unless you thought we could be a little more, and then we could make this a date,â he chuckled.
âI think we should keep this strictly professional. See ya then, and I look forward to hearing what you have,â and she disconnected.
As she shoved the phone into her pocket, it, went off again, but it was a text message from Laine this time.
âHey, bring all that you have so far on the case. Letâs compare notes.â
Autumn dropped her phone into the cup holder, started the car, and drove off. She wished she had time to swing by the office before she ran home to get ready, but she knew that there was no time. She jumped back onto the freeway and headed home.
Every day when Autumn got home, she sat outside in her car and reflected on the day. She had been doing this for a while to help not bring her work home, but this case had all of her heartstrings dancing around in circles.
